Great Washer Maintenance Tips and Tricks

1. Clean the Washer Drum and Gasket Regularly Soap scum, lint, and detergent residue can build up inside the drum and rubber door gasket, leading to odors and mold. Run a cleaning cycle with washing machine cleaner or white vinegar and wipe down the gasket once a month.

2. Leave the Door Open After Each Load Keeping the door ajar helps moisture evaporate and prevents mold and mildew from forming inside the washer. This is especially important for front-load models like those from LG and Samsung.

3. Check and Clean the Drain Pump Filter Lint, coins, and other debris can clog the drain pump filter, leading to poor drainage or error codes. On most Whirlpool and GE machines, the filter is accessible behind a small panel near the bottom front of the unit.

4. Use the Right Detergent and Amount High-efficiency washers require HE detergent, and using too much can cause excessive suds and buildup inside the machine. Overuse of detergent is a common issue in both top-load and front-load washers and can lead to foul odors and mechanical strain.

5. Balance the Load and Machine Uneven loads or an unlevel machine can cause loud vibrations or damage over time. Make sure loads are distributed evenly and the washer is on a flat, stable surface using a level and adjustable feet if needed.

COMMON WASHING MACHINE PROBLEMS
PINELLAS COUNTY SERVICE AREA

Washer Won’t Start This can be caused by a faulty lid switch, control board failure, or problems with the door latch sensor. Whirlpool and GE top-load models often experience lid switch wear over time, preventing the unit from starting.

Not Spinning or Agitating Broken drive belts, defective motor couplings, or worn-out transmission components can prevent spinning or agitation. This is a frequent issue in older Maytag and Samsung machines with heavy-duty cycles.

Washer Won’t Drain Clogged drain pumps, kinked hoses, or a failed drain motor can stop water from draining properly. LG front-load models may also display error codes when sensors detect standing water after a cycle.

Excessive Vibration or Shaking Unbalanced loads, worn suspension rods, or broken shock absorbers are common causes of vibration. Electrolux and Samsung front-load washers are particularly sensitive to uneven flooring or off-balance drum movement.

Water Leaks During or After Cycles Leaks may be due to damaged door gaskets, loose inlet hoses, or cracked drain hoses. LG and Whirlpool washers often require gasket replacement when visible wear or mold buildup appears.

Washer is Noisy During Operation Grinding, banging, or squealing noises may be caused by worn drum bearings, loose pulleys, or failing drive motors. GE and Maytag units frequently show these signs as internal parts begin to degrade from heavy use.

Overfilling or Underfilling with Water Malfunctioning water level sensors, faulty pressure switches, or a stuck inlet valve can cause improper water levels. Samsung washers often show this issue when their pressure hoses become clogged or dislodged.

Washer Door or Lid Won’t Unlock Faulty door lock assemblies or control board glitches can leave the lid or door locked after a cycle finishes. This is common in Whirlpool Duet and LG front-load models with electronic door mechanisms.

Foul Odors from the Drum Odors can result from mold or bacteria buildup caused by using too much detergent or leaving moisture in the drum. This is often reported in front-load models from Electrolux, LG, and Samsung, especially when maintenance cycles are skipped.

Control Panel Not Responding Unresponsive controls may stem from a failed touchpad, defective main board, or electrical surges. Maytag and GE washers sometimes require control board replacement when buttons stop responding completely.
